BRIEF: Police release surveillance photo of SUV in hit-and-run death

Feb. 24--Chicago police on Tuesday released a surveillance photo of a silver SUV wanted in connection with a hit-and-run accident in the Avondale neighborhood that killed a 34-year-old man over the weekend.

The family of Christopher Sanchez had gathered Monday night at Milwaukee and Belmont avenues to ask for the public's help finding the person who killed him as he crossed the intersection about 5:20 a.m. Sunday.

Police had earlier said the vehicle that killed Sanchez was believed to be white, but in an alert issued Monday, investigators said it was believed to be a silver SUV, possibly a Jeep Cherokee, with damage to the right side of its front end, and a broken headlight. The SUV fled north on Milwaukee Avenue following the accident.

Sanchez was rushed to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead Sunday morning, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, the man was thrown about 30 feet in the air.

Chicago police are asking anyone with information about the hit-and-run to call the department's major accident investigation unit at 312-745-4521.

Sanchez's family has started a GoFundMe page to help defray funeral expenses.
