BRIEF: Police officer injured while running after shoplifting suspect

July 31--A Chicago police officer was injured while tying to arrest a shoplifting suspect late Thursday in the South Loop neighborhood downtown.

A male attacker fled during an arrest attempt in the 1200 block of South Wabash Avenue around 11:10 p.m., said Officer Amina Greer, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.

While trying to run after the attacker, a police officer suffered a minor injury and was taken to an area hospital, Greer said.

Late Thursday, officers used yellow crime tape to block off an alley underneath rail tracks next to Jewel Osco in the 1200 block of South Wabash.

Officers also brought out a K-9 unit in order to investigate a nearby garage, where the suspect was thought to be hiding.

The male was eventually caught early Friday and taken into custody without an incident, Greer said.

No other information was immediately available about the incident.
