BRIEF: Police: Man killed in South Side car crash after fleeing traffic stop

Jan. 23--A 38-year-old man was killed after he crashed his car while fleeing police late Friday in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

Police officers pulled over the white-colored SUV the man was driving after he made an illegal right turn in the 6300 block of South King Drive, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago police spokesman.

Officers walked up to the car and asked the man for his driver's license. But the 38-year-old sped off south on King Drive when he couldn't show his license, Alfaro said.

The man then crashed his car into a viaduct around 10:58 p.m. in the 6800 block of South Anthony Avenue, Alfaro said.

He was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene, Alfaro said.

The Police Department's Major Accidents Unit is investigating the crash.
