BRIEF: Police: Man in custody following shootout in Burnham

Nov. 13--A man is in custody in connection with a shootout early Wednesday in south suburban Burnham in which the man and a woman suffered injuries not considered life-threatening, police Chief Peter Belos said Thursday.

The suspect, who Belos said is a man in his early 20s, has been in police custody since his apprehension in Calumet City on Wednesday afternoon.

Belos said charges against him have been delayed because known witnesses failed to show up at the Burnham police station.

Belos said the man now in custody and a group of women were in a strip mall parking lot in the 2300 block of State Street at 1:19 a.m. when the gunfight erupted. The man was hit during the exchange and a stray bullet also hit one of the women, Belos said.

Police have no description of a second male suspect, who remains at large, Belos said.

Belos said the two men are "probably rival gang members."
