$750K bail for suspect accused of Near West Side sexual assault

Oct. 25--A judge Sunday set bail at $750,000 for a 23-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a woman who had been waiting at a Near West Side bus stop earlier this month.

Judge James Brown set the bail during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building for Anthony Titus, 23, of the 2200 block of West Warren Boulevard.

Titus was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, according to police and prosecutors.

The 23-year-old woman was at a bus stop in the 2100 block of West Madison Street on Oct. 15 when she was attacked about 5:05 a.m., police said.

A man choked her and forced her to a secluded area, where he assaulted her, according to an arrest report. The woman fought off the attacker, who kicked her in the face and then ran west, according to police.

The attack was "random, violent and without warning," said Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Jennifer Keating.

Keating said a witness who was walking a dog saw the victim running away and bleeding from her mouth. The victim was treated at Rush University Medical Center.

Security cameras in the area recorded part of the incident, and the victim described her attacker to responding officers. A man matching his description was arrested, and the victim later identified him, prosecutors said.

Chicago Tribune's Rachel Crosby contributed.
