BRIEF: Police looking for witnesses in Westlake stabbing

Sept. 11--Police are looking for any information in the stabbing death of a 21-year-old man who was found in a park early Thursday morning.

About 4:35 a.m., police were called to the Lafayette Recreation Center in the 600 block of South Lafayette Park Place and found the man, who police have not yet identified, suffering from stab wounds.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, and detectives are looking for anyone who may have been driving or walking in the area and may have seen something.

LAPD Det. John Skaggs said police have interviewed several witnesses but need more information.

"We don't know that much yet," he said.

In the last 12 months, nine people have been killed within a mile of the stabbing. The last person killed in the area was Juan Mazariegos, 23, who was shot in the back of the head.

Anyone with information is asked to call West Bureau homicide investigators at (213) 382-9470. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
