BRIEF: Police investigating death of woman, 18, in Lansing

Jan. 25--Police in south suburban Lansing are investigating the death of an 18-year-old woman identified by family members as a senior at Chicago's Kenwood Academy High School.

Summer Mitchell was found in an apartment in the 17700 block of South Commercial Avenue around 11:20 a.m. Sunday after police responded to a "medical emergency," the department said in a release. She was pronounced dead at 5:24 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Lansing police would only say they were conducting a death investigation with the help of Illinois State Police.

Family members told WGN-TV they had been told Mitchell was shot to death, but a Lansing police spokesman said investigators were awaiting an autopsy scheduled for Monday.

Family members told WGN-TV that Mitchell lived with her boyfriend. They learned something was wrong when his mother called them Sunday morning to say something had happened to Mitchell. Mitchell's gold Grand Am is missing, family members said.

Mitchell was a high school senior, taking online classes through Kenwood Academy High School and working at a local Family Dollar, her family told WGN-TV.
