BRIEF: Police: Downers Grove woman filed false robbery report

Dec. 13--A Downers Grove woman was arrested after police said she made a false report that an intruder was trying to break into her apartment.

Kelcie M. Mortell, 20, was arrested Dec. 11 on a charge of disorderly conduct, Lt. Michael Willison said in a release.

Willison said officers responded to Mortell's apartment in the 2800 block of Gabriella Street around 2:40 p.m. on Dec. 10. Mortell had locked herself in the bathroom and called police, claiming that she heard a man trying to pry open her front door and that he was in her apartment.

Officers surrounded the building and a multi-jurisdictional SWAT team arrived to search the building, but no suspect was located. Police interviewed Mortell again the following day and determined that she had made up the story about the intruder, Willison said.

Mortell posted $2,000 and is due to return to court on Dec. 22, Willison said. Filing a false police or fire report is a Class 4 felony, according to Illinois statute.

Willison said it was not yet determined known how much in resources and staff time the department spent in investigating the false report.
