Nov. 25--A customer and a store clerk teamed up to stop a man trying to rob a Woodridge grocery store early Tuesday morning, police said.
The attempted robbery took place at the Jewel-Osco store at 2317 West 75th Street around 4 a.m., according to police spokeswoman Traci Steger.
Christopher Esbensen, 24 , of Bolingbrook, is charged with attempted armed robbery, aggravated battery and retail theft, Steger said.
Authorities allege that Esbensen went into the store and took a pack of cigarettes from behind the customer service desk. When he got to the checkout line, he tried to steal money from out of the cash register, Steger said.
The employee shut the register drawer while another customer grabbed Esbensen from behind, according to police. The employee then noticed the suspect was brandishing a knife and alerted the customer, who then threw Esbensen to the ground, police said. Esbensen fled the store, Steger said.
Woodridge officers later chased Esbensen down on foot and arrested him near the store, police said.
The case is still under investigation.
