BRIEF: Police ask for help identifying hit-and-run driver who struck crossing guard

Jan. 21--Police are asking for help in identifying the driver of an SUV who fled after striking a crossing guard in the West Pullman neighborhood last week.

The 27-year-old woman was helping children at the intersection of 127th Street and Union Avenue when she was hit by a black or dark-colored SUV, police said.

The woman was holding a stop sign and had a child by her side when she was struck, police said. The driver of the SUV fled the scene without stopping.

The woman was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition, officials said.

The driver was seen heading west on 127th and then north on Emerald Avenue at "a high rate of speed," according to a police alert.

Neighbors told WGN-TV that they have been asking for a stop sign at the intersection for years.

Anyone with information can contact the Major Accident Investigation Unit at 312-745-4521.
