BRIEF: Police arrest dozens at what they call illegal road race in South L.A.

Dec. 28--An illegal car race was stopped in its tracks after authorities arrested several people who attempted to take over a section of the 105 Freeway in South Los Angeles early Sunday, officials said.

Police, sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers swarmed the participants, prompting a Sig Alert that closed the eastbound 105 from Crenshaw Boulevard to Vermont Avenue about 3:30 a.m., authorities said. The alert was lifted about 4:48 a.m.

The police action resulted in several high-speed chases, said CHP Officer Tony Polizzi. Several people were arrested on charges of suspicion of possessing stolen firearms and stolen vehicles as well as narcotics violations and driving under the influence, Polizzi said.

Many details, including the total number of participants and arrests were not immediately available. No injuries were reported, Polizzi said.

Officials said that illegal street racing and cruising activity is posing a growing safety threat throughout Los Angeles County. In some cases, innocent motorists have been attacked and vehicles and private property vandalized by spectators, Polizzi said.

The CHP was expected to release further information Monday.
