May 15--"Pitch Perfect 2" kicked off to a solid start at the box office Thursday night with a domestic gross of $4.6 million from pre-shows, according to studio estimates.
The musical-comedy sequel to the 2012 surprise hit "Pitch Perfect" started its run in 2,652 theaters at 7 p.m. The Elizabeth Banks-directed film is going up against "Mad Max: Fury Road" in its debut. "Mad Max," directed by George Miller, scored $3.7 million in its Thursday late-night opening.
Both the lighthearted a cappella frolic and the R-rated post-apocalyptic wasteland adventure are expected to gross around $40 million from their first weekend in the U.S. and Canada, possibly ending the box office reign of "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
"Pitch Perfect 2," from Universal Pictures, stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, while "Mad Max," from Warner Bros., features Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy.
