BRIEF: Pete Carroll promotes and adds familiar faces to Seahawks staff

Feb. 10--Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks are keeping it mostly in the immediate -- and the USC -- families when it comes to the coaching staff.

The Seahawks announced Monday that Kris Richard was the new defensive coordinator. Richard, who had been the Seahawks' defensive backs coach, played his final USC season under Carroll in 2001 and served on the Trojans coaching staff in 2008 and 2009.

Richard replaces Dan Quinn, who left to become coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

Former Trojans and Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu was hired as an assistant linebackers coach.

Carroll's oldest son, Brennan, was hired as an assistant offensive line coach. Brennan Carroll coached USC tight ends and added recruiting coordinator responsibilities in 2008 and 2009 before joining the staff at the University of Miami.

Carroll's son Nate is an assistant wide receivers coach for the Seahawks.

Among other Seahawks assistants and strength coaches with USC ties: Carl Smith, Pat Ruel, Rocy Seto, Brian Schneider, Dave Canales, Chad Morton, Chris Carlisle and Jamie Yanchar.
