BRIEF: Man dies after being rescued from Chicago River

Sept. 27--A 19-year-old man died after being pulled from the river early Saturday morning, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Emergency crews responded to the Riverwalk near North Orleans Street about 4:20 a.m. to find two people in the water, said Chief Juan Hernandez of the Chicago Fire Department.

The man was later identified as Ali Ahsan, of the 6900 block of North Kedzie Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at 5:17 a.m., according to the office.

When emergency crews arrived, they found that one person had fallen in the water, and the other apparently had jumped in to help his friend, according to Hernandez.

The person who fell in the water was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The man who jumped in after his friend refused treatment on the scene.

An autopsy conducted on Sunday determined that Ahsan died of drowning and ruled it an accident.
