Jan. 29--A man died in what police believed was a suicide after he jumped in front of a Red Line train near 63rd Street early Friday afternoon, officials said.
CTA officials were notified that a person was hit at the 63rd Street Station about 12:20 p.m., a spokesman said. The man was believed to have committed suicide by jumping in front of an "L" train, a police spokesman said.
Red Line service was suspended between 47th and 95th streets before 12:30 p.m., according to a CTA alert. Service was resuming by about 2:15 p.m., according to the CTA.
Several police and fire cars stood parked on the 63rd Street bridge with their lights flashing as about 20 firefighters and CTA workers in yellow and orange vests stood at the front of the train, inside it and on the platform around a stretcher.
A ladder was placed on the platform to the tracks, as an ambulance sat nearby. Traffic was slow on the ramp and people were slowing down to gawk through their car windows. CTA workers turned commuters away from the station and pointed them toward shuttle buses going north and south.
While power was turned off because of the incident, bus shuttles were in place for the portion of the Red Line affected. Check the CTA's website for travel updates.
