BRIEF: Pedestrian killed in Back of the Yards crash

Dec. 18--A pedestrian was fatally hit by a vehicle in the Back of the Yards neighborhood early Friday, Chicago police said.

About 5:50 a.m., a 50-year-old male driver was driving west in the 1900 block of West Garfield Boulevard when he hit a 49-year-old woman who was crossing Garfield outside the crosswalk.

The driver did not leave the scene, and citations are pending, said Chicago police spokeswoman Officer Janel Sedevic.

The pedestrian was taken to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced dead at

6:42 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. An autopsy is slated for Saturday.

Authorities said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
