BRIEF: Patriots apologize for racist tweet generated on their team account

Nov. 14--The New England Patriots offered a public apology Thursday night after the team's official Twitter account posted a racist message that was auto-generated.

To say thanks for reaching 1 million followers on their Twitter account, the team offered fans the chance to retweet their message, which would automatically put that user's handle on a Patriots jersey.

Someone created the handle @Ihate[The N word], which the team's account auto-generated on the back of a jersey, and the picture was posted on the Patriots' account for a while.

Those who saw the message blasted the team for allowing it.

That message was erased, and the team apologized around 7:30 p.m.

"We apologize for the regrettable tweet that went out from our account. Our filtering system failed, and we will be more vigilant in the future," the team tweeted.
