BRIEF: Patient dead in apparent suicide at Munster hospital

June 04--A patient at Community Hospital's Acute Rehabilitation Unit in Munster, Ind. died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday morning, the hospital said.

The incident occurred in the patient's hospital room and police were immediately contacted, according to a hospital statement. The unit assists patients with a comprehensive daily therapy program after they have experienced a serious illness or injury, such as strokes, accidents, arthritis, and neurological disorders, according to the Community Hospital's website.

The hospital's risk management department and law enforcement are conducting an investigation into the event.

The patient's identity was not released due to patient privacy laws. Grief counseling has been offered to the hospital staff to help cope with the event, the hospital said.

"On behalf of Community Hospital, its physicians and staff, we extend our condolences to the patient's family and friends," spokeswoman Marie Forszt said in the statement.
