Oct. 21--A passer-by sounded the alarm Wednesday morning when a display of clothing in the Levi's store on North Michigan Avenue caught fire, giving firefighters enough of a jump to quickly put out the flames, officials said.
The person called 911 after seeing smoke about 6:45 a.m. at the store at 600 N. Michigan Ave., said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
Responding fire crews at first didn't see anything, he said. But when they approached the store they saw smoke inside and found a display of merchandise on fire, according to Langford and police.
Firefighters were able to put out the fire with hand pumps, Langford said.
The crews pulled smoldering T-shirts out of the building and left them on the sidewalk after they had been soaked.
