BRIEF: Pass the salt? Fewer Americans avoiding it, survey shows

July 28--Don't be surprised if there's a fight at the dinner table for the salt shaker.

Fewer Americans say they are trying to avoid salt in their diets and more people are trying to include salt compared with previous years, according to a July survey.

In a Gallup poll of about 1,000 adults nationwide, 39 percent of Americans said they were "actively" trying to avoid consuming salt, a drop from 46 percent last year and 49 percent in 2006.

At the same time, 35 percent of adults said they were trying to include salt in their diets. That's up from 28 percent in 2014 and 24 percent in 2006.

More people are trying to avoid fat than salt, the poll showed.

Only 47 percent said they were trying to avoid fat in their diet, down from 56 percent in 2014 and 64 percent in 2004. A quarter of adults said they try to include it or don't think about it.
