BRIEF: Paris moves toward 2024 Olympic bid

April 13--Paris moved closer to vying for the 2024 Summer Olympics on Monday when the French capital's city council voted its support for a bid.

Next comes a meeting between France's president and the leader of the International Olympic Committee later this week.

An official bid could be submitted in early June.

"This is an historical vote which marks an important moment of our collective life," said Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris. "We are now committed to the Olympic adventure."

This latest development from Europe comes amid troubled times for an American bid. Public support for the campaign in Boston has sagged in recent months and officials there are scrambling to recover.

Germany has also thrown its hat into the ring, putting forth the city of Hamburg.

The IOC will select a host city in 2017.
