BRIEF: Pacific Coast Highway, westbound 10 closed in Santa Monica for death probe

Feb. 27--A stretch of Pacific Coast Highway and the westbound 10 Freeway in Santa Monica were shut down early Friday morning after a person was found dead on the highway.

"It came down as a possible car collision, but possibly someone fell down from the cliffs," said Santa Monica Police Sgt. Frank Marnell.

The body was found at about 3 a.m. just north of the McClure Tunnel where the freeway transitions to PCH, Marnell said.

Police have shut down the roadway in both directions and are diverting traffic off the westbound 10 at 4th Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

To connect to PCH from the freeway, officials said, commuters will have to exit 4th Street and head to San Vicente Boulevard, then make a left on 7th Street until it turns into Entrada Drive, then take a left on Channel Road until it reaches the highway.

Officials had no estimate for when the roads would be reopened.
