BRIEF: Owner of 4 Chicago-area golf courses picks Troon to manage them

Dec. 11--The owner of four Chicago-area private golf courses has hired a new management company to operate the clubs.

John Weiss, owner of the Royal Fox and Royal Hawk in St. Charles, the Grove in Long Grove and Klein Creek in Winfield, selected Troon, a golf management company based in Scottsdale, Ariz, according to a news release. Troon said it has more than 250 golf courses in its portfolio.

The four clubs, which had been managed by Atlanta-based Sequoia Golf Management, notified the Illinois Department of Labor in November that it planned to lay off 288 employees. But the notice was an indication that Sequoia Golf would no longer employ those workers come Jan. 1, not of mass layoffs.

The Tribune tried to reach a Sequoia representative before publishing a story about the layoff notice Dec. 3, but the representative did not respond by deadline.

A Troon spokesman said the clubs' employees will transition to the company but declined to give a total head count.
