BRIEF: Overturned fuel tanker shuts down 10 Freeway in Fontana during rush hour

Feb. 05--An overturned fuel tanker has closed the 10 Freeway in both directions in Fontana, shutting off a major commuter route between Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.

The big rig was hauling two tankers full of fuel westbound when it rolled over onto the right shoulder near Citrus Avenue about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash caused another vehicle to spin out and hundreds of gallons of fuel to spill onto the highway, according to CHP dispatch logs.

The tanker was fully loaded with 8,600 gallons at the time of the crash, the CHP said.

Since the rollover, traffic has been diverted onto Cherry Avenue, creating a massive logjam of cars, trucks and big rigs onto Fontana city streets. Authorities closed both sides of the freeway as hazmat crews worked to clean up the spill and right the tanker.

Caltrans officials estimated that the eastbound lanes would be closed until at least 6:30 p.m. and westbound lanes until at least 7:30 p.m.

There were no reported injuries. The cause of the rollover is under investigation.
