BRIEF: Ortega Highway reopens after man in rollover crash is fatally struck in hit-and-run

June 19--A man was killed early Friday near Ortega Highway after surviving a rollover crash, then being struck by a driver who fled the scene, officials said.

The fatal collision prompted authorities to close the highway in both directions. It was reopened just before 11 a.m.

California Highway Patrol officials said the man was involved in a solo-vehicle crash early Friday, causing it to roll over off the highway.

The man was able to crawl out of the wreckage and begin walking along the highway.

After walking about a mile, a vehicle, possibly a Subaru, struck the man at about 4:26 a.m. and fled, CHP officials said. The man died at the scene.

Eastbound 74 at Gateway and westbound 74 to the Orange-Riverside County line were closed as officers investigated the deadly collision, said Officer John Latosquin.
