March 04--Original Rainbow Cone will open for the season at noon on March 4, according to the shop's Facebook page. The grand reopening celebration, featuring "limited freebies," will be Saturday, March 5 at noon.
For many Chicagoans, the 90-year-old Beverly ice cream shop is synonymous with summer. Its signature item: a cone piled with chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (vanilla with cherries and walnuts), and pistachio ice creams -- in flat slices, not scoops -- topped off with orange sherbet.
When Rainbow Cone was founded in 1926, a cone cost 13 cents. Today, you'll shell out $3.39 for a small and $4.99 for a large.
