BRIEF: One dead, one missing after vessels collide off Catalina Island

Sept. 06--One person was killed and three others were injured after two vessels collided in the waters off Catalina Island early Sunday, authorities said. A fifth person involved in the collision is missing.

The incident was reported about 1:20 a.m. near Descanso Bay, about a quarter of a mile northeast of Casino Point, according to the Coast Guard, which said a dingy with five people aboard collided with another vessel.

One person aboard the dingy was confirmed dead, and the three injured passengers were transported to UCLA Medical Center. Two of the passengers suffered minor injuries and the other a head injury, authorities said. No other details about the victims were immediately available.

The Coast Guard said crews were continuing to search for the fifth passenger of the dingy.
