Man wounds girlfriend, kills himself in Chicago Nordstrom shooting

Nov. 29--A man shot his girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself inside a Nordstrom department store in Chicago on Friday night, police confirmed to The Times.

The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. at the store at 55 E. Grand, police said. The man is dead and the woman is in critical condition, police said.

"She was working up on the second floor when he approached her, fired one shot, which struck her," John Escalante, chief of detectives for the Chicago Police Department, told the Chicago Tribune. "He then turned the gun to himself and shot and killed himself."

No other shoppers were targeted, police said.

The woman was described by police as a seasonal employee at the downtown store. Authorities said it was not yet known if the couple was still dating or if they had previously split.

The Tribune reported that, according to court records, the man had sought a temporary restraining order against the woman in April, alleging stalking, but that the request was denied.

Nordstrom officials announced on the store's website that the location, at the heart of Chicago's busy downtown shopping district, will be closed Saturday.
