BRIEF: Officials: Gunman shot after pointing rifle at Harvey cops

Feb. 13--A man was shot by police early Friday morning when he pointed a 9mm rifle directly at them in south suburban Harvey, officials said.

About 4 a.m., Harvey police were alerted to the presence of a man with a gun near 159th and Page Avenue, said Sean Howard, a spokesman for the Harvey Police Department.

When police arrived on the scene, they saw the man with a 9mm rifle with an extended magazine. At some point the man pointed the weapon directly at the responding officers, and in fear of their lives, they shot him, said Howard.

The man was taken with non-life threatening injuries to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, said Howard.

Officials from the Illinois State Police were interviewing officers at the Harvey Police Department and are leading the investigation into the police-involved shooting.

As of 1 p.m., the injured man had not been charged.
