BRIEF: Officials: Fire does 'minimal' damage to vacant Oak Park Dominick's

Jan. 14--A fire sparked by construction workers renovating the vacant Dominick's grocery store on Lake Street in Oak Park Tuesday caused minimal damage, officials said.

The fire started just before noon when workers cut a small gas line, Oak Park Battalion Chief Mark Wilson said. The fire started on the inside of the building and burned a small hole in the roof, he said.

The store is being converted into a Pete's Fresh Market. Pete's bought the Dominick's store in January 2014. Safeway Inc. closed the store, located at 259 Lake Street, in December 2013 along with about 70 other stores.

Wilson said the fire was small and resulted in "minimal" damage.

"It was under construction, so there was nothing to really damage," he said. "I don't think it should impact the conversion that much because it's not that far along."

No one was injured in the fire, officials said. The new Pete's location is expected to open in the spring.
