Jan. 14--A San Diego police officer is hospitalized with serious injuries after being run down Tuesday night by a possible burglary suspect driving the officer's patrol car, police said Wednesday.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. in the Barrio Logan neighborhood when officers responded to a call of a home burglary in progress.
One officer parked his car near the home as the investigation was underway, according to Lt. Mike Hastings.
As the officer was interviewing a witness, a possible suspect in the burglary got into the car, hit the officer and attempted to drive away, with the officer on the hood, Hastings said.
As the man sped away, a second officer opened fire. The officer on the hood fell to the ground as the car hit a power pole, Hastings said.
William Frank Bogard, 25, was arrested by police with the help of a police dog. Bogard was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound.
The injured officer was identified as Jeffrey Swett, a 25-year veteran of the police department.
Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman sent out a tweet, on behalf of the department, thanking the public "for your thoughts, prayers support as our officer recovers from serious injuries."
