Man, 18, shot by campus police at El Camino College

Jan. 23--Police at El Camino College in Torrance shot and wounded an 18-year-old man who pointed a gun at officers Thursday in a campus parking garage, authorities said.

El Camino College Police Department officers responded just after 11 a.m. to a parking structure on the southwest side of campus after reports that an armed man might be holding hostages, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

In parking structure F, police found a man who matched the description of the armed man. There were no hostages.

After police confronted him, the man brandished a gun and aimed it at officers, the Sheriff's Department said.

"Fearing for their lives, the officers fired at the suspect," the department said.

The man, a former student at the college, was taken to a hospital in critical condition. He was undergoing surgery Thursday evening.

No officers were injured, and a handgun was found at the scene.

The campus remained open during the shooting but school officials asked students, staff and faculty to avoid parking structure F, according to a statement released by the college.

The Sheriff's Department is handling the investigation into the shooting.
