March 04--Matt Hegarty, a starter last season on Notre Dame's offensive line, will not return for a fifth season at the school, Hegarty told ESPN.com.
Hegarty, who overcame a stroke in 2012, is in line to graduate in May but will seek to continue his playing career at another school. Hegarty started 11 games for Notre Dame last season, most of them at center.
"Recently my coaches informed me that they wanted me to change positions," Hegarty told ESPN.com. "They also explained that with many younger players in the wings, they wanted to develop them more heavily in the rotation-- a need that I understand and appreciate."
Hegarty's exit means Nick Martin could move back to center.
"Notre Dame has amassed formidable depth on the O-line and have many very talented players to fill all positions," Hegarty said.
