Jan. 27--Jaap van Zweden, the widely respected music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and a regular guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, has been named the next music director of the New York Philharmonic, that orchestra announced Wednesday.
The Dutch-born van Zweden, 55, will begin his five-year contract in 2018-19, serving as music director designate as of the 2017-18 season. He will become the orchestra's 26th music director, succeeding Alan Gilbert, whose nine-year tenure will end with the 2017-18 season.
van Zweden will continue as music director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, a post he has held since 2012. He has appeared frequently in Chicago since his CSO podium debut in 2008 and is scheduled to lead the CSO and Chicago Symphony Chorus in performances of Brahms' "A German Requiem" in November.
