BRIEF: Notre Dame takeaways

Nov. 02--Defense banged up: As has been the case recently, Notre Dame was banged up following a win over Navy. Linebackers Joe Schmidt and James Onwulau, defensive end Sheldon Day and tackle Jarron Jones all suffered injuries, leaving the Irish defense depleted.

Start 'em up: Notre Dame scheming for Navy's option attack meant some new faces in the starting lineup with linebacker Greer Martini, safety Drue Tranquill and defensive lineman Justin Utupo getting their first starts.

Fuller demands attention: Despite a strong season so far, Will Fuller was left off the latest watch list for the Biletnikoff Award. Fuller caught his ninth touchdown of the season in the first half. His eight scores entering the game was tied for seventh in the country.

Leaning on Morgan: With middle linebacker Joe Schmidt injured, freshman Nyles Morgan from Crete-Monee got his first crack at playing time and made some nice plays.

Up next: Notre Dame faces a tough test Saturday when it travels to No. 14 Arizona State.
