BRIEF: Note to springtime gardeners: A frost advisory kicks in early Sunday

May 14--Springtime gardeners are being warned to take precautions for sensitive outdoor plants as a high-pressure system from Canada is expected to lower temperatures to around freezing early Sunday.

The National Weather Service's Romeoville office issued a frost advisory that predicts overnight temperatures in the lower to mid-30s in the northern suburbs near the Wisconsin border from Rockford to Waukegan that may reach into portions of DuPage County. Meanwhile, temperatures in the city are expected to hover near 40 degrees.

The advisory goes into effect between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. Sunday. The unseasonable chill isn't expected to affect overnight road conditions, said weather service meteorologist Kevin Birk.

"There will be no roadway freeze-ups, but we are warning people to take precautions for any sensitive outdoor plants," Birk said. Plants sensitive to the cold should be covered or brought indoors for the night, officials said.

After daybreak, Chicago-area temperatures are expected in the mid- to upper 50s, Birk added.
