BRIEF: Northwestern snags a QB for 2017 recruiting class

April 26--Pat Fitzgerald truly doesn't care how many stars are next to a recruit's name.

He proved that again by securing a verbal commitment Tuesday from quarterback Andrew Marty, who is unranked by Rivals.com and had drawn offers from only Mid-American Conference schools, perhaps because he missed part of his junior season with a leg injury.

The 247sports.com composite ranking has him 68th among pro-style quarterbacks and 65th among prospects in Ohio.

Marty is 6-4, 200 pounds and was committed to Miami (Ohio) until Northwestern offered him a scholarship. Marty wrote on Twitter that his dream has been to play Big Ten football.

The Wildcats do not plan to take another quarterback in their 2017 class, which has 12 players and currently ranks 14th nationally via 247sports.com.

Clayton Thorson figures to start under center through 2018. Matt Alviti will back him up this season and perhaps in 2017 if he stays for a fifth year.

Lloyd Yates (Oak Park-River Forest) is likely to move to wideout. So that could yield a future battle at quarterback among Marty, incoming freshman Aidan Smith and perhaps walk-on TJ Green, son of former NFL quarterback Trent Green.
