April 17--A 26-year-old man has been charged in a Friday drive-by shooting spree that left one man seriously injured in the city's Austin neighborhood.
Daniel Zampini of the 3300 block of North Kedvale Avenue was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a weapon by a felon and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm in a vehicle near a school, police said.
The charges stem from two Friday incidents. About 1:05 a.m. that day, police said Zampini pulled alongside a man and a woman, both 20, and fired shots in the 100 block of North Austin Boulevard. The two were not injured.
Police then said Zampini continued driving to the first block of South Mayfield Avenue, just South of Madiston Street, where he fired shots from a black vehicle at a 38-year-old man who was standing outside. The man was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital with two gunshot wounds to the abdomen.
Police said Zampini was identified as the shooter in both attacks, and he was scheduled to appear Sunday at a bail hearing.
