Nov. 20--Heat should be restored by midday to more than 80 Edison Park homes after work crews ruptured a main and cut off gas overnight, officials said.
The natural gas main was damaged about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 6700 block of North Oconto Avenue, authorities said. A "third-party contractor" struck the main and caused a small fire that was put out by the Chicago Fire Department, according to Jennifer Block, a spokeswoman for Peoples Gas.
A total of 82 homes lost gas service because of damage to the main as well as "water infiltration" caused by the crews putting out the fire, Block said.
Workers finished repairing the main about 4 a.m., and two-man teams were moving house to house to restart gas service, Block said. About 25 workers in all were on the scene restoring service, Block said.
"Because of the extreme weather, each home takes at least a half hour," she said. "It is going to take us most of the morning."
As of about 6:15 a.m., gas had been restored to about 10 homes, Block said.
