March 01--A Lincoln Square man has been charged with felony police impersonation after prosecutors say a witness saw him at a school, pretending to be a Chicago officer.
Charles Wade, 26, was arrested Sunday night just before 11 p.m. on his home block in the 2700 block of West Summerdale Avenue, according to a news release from Chicago police.
Wade faces a felony charge of impersonating a police officer and a charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon with body armor. He was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bail in a hearing midday Monday before Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas, according to prosecutors and court records.
A witness contacted police saying that Wade owned police equipment and a uniform, and investigators identified him as someone "who had appeared in public and claimed to be" a Chicago police officer, according to the release.
A witness saw Wade at a school wearing a police uniform and acting as if he were a police officer, said Steve Campbell, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.
When police arrested Wade outside his home, he was in his car with the police equipment, prosecutors said.
Wade was due back in court March 8.
