BRIEF: No bail for teen charged in July fatal shooting in Englewood

Dec. 02--A 17-year-old boy was denied bail in the July 7 slaying of a 19-year-old woman who was shot in the city's Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

The shooting happened after a violent Fourth of July weekend in which at least 82 people were shot, 14 fatally.

About 7 p.m. that Monday, Jaynisha Schaffer was walking east with three friends on a sidewalk in the 2100 block of West 69th Street when they were approached by someone on a bike, according to police. The person opened fire, striking Schaffer in the back.

Schaffer collapsed at the scene and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead at 8:11 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

A witness identified the gunman as Timmis Haywood of the 6700 block of South Claremont Avenue, about a half-mile from the site of the shooting, and he was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, according to court documents.

Haywood appeared Monday afternoon at Central Bond Court, where he was denied bail. His next court appearance was scheduled for Dec. 19.
