BRIEF: No. 3 Virginia too much for No. 13 Notre Dame in 62-56 victory

Jan. 11--SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame hung tough, but it didn't have enough firepower to overcome No. 3 Virginia.

The Cavaliers defeated the Irish 62-56 on a competitive Saturday at Purcell Pavilion. Notre Dame shot just 34 percent but had the lead for much of the second half until and offensive outburst from Virginia overwhelmed Notre Dame.

Key 3-pointers from Malcolm Brogdon and Justin Anderson ignited a 9-0 Virginia run in the final four minutes. Darion Atkins finished with 14 points for Virginia while Pat Connaughton had 21 for Notre Dame.

The Cavaliers clamped down on Jerian Grant, who had six points on 2 of 8 shooting, though Grant did have six assists and helped create other open looks for Notre Dame's offense.

Virginia finished shooting 49 percent from the field. V.J. Beachem had 12 first-half points for Notre Dame but stayed on the bench for much of the second half.
