BRIEF: Nintendo dates its successor to the Wii U, the NX

April 27--Nintendo unveiled that its successor to the poor-selling Wii U, tentatively titled the NX, will launch in March of 2017. The new console, the company revealed in an earnings call, will not be present at June's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles.

Instead, the entertainment giant will focus its efforts this year on promoting an upcoming installment to its "The Legend of Zelda" series. The title, currently unnamed, will launch simultaneously for the Wii U and the NX in 2017.

Prior to the announcement, it was widely suspected that the Wii U's days were numbered, as Nintendo has not been shy in revealing that it had a successor in the works. Little is known at this point about the NX, but Nintendo stated in its latest earnings call that the console will be shown later this year.

Nintendo's latest chapter in its "The Legend of Zelda" series has been delayed numerous times. The title was initially pegged for a 2015 release. The project's leader, Eiji Aonuma, has spoken of a desire to drastically reimagine the "Zelda" formula.

The upcoming take on "The Legend of Zelda" will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at this year's E3.
