May 06--Though the fact that film is an art is not much disputed anymore, every once in a while the medium involves itself with other arts in fascinating ways, as these two films, one a DVD release, the other connected to a live appearance, demonstrate.
The DVD release under the Naxos label is "Redes," a 1935 Mexican neo-documentary about the plight of impoverished fishermen. Though the film is co-directed by Fred Zinnemann and stunningly photographed by Paul Strand, the real lure is the rich, pulsating score by Silvestre Revueltas, here dramatically recorded for the first time in stereo by the PostClassical Ensemble. It's a pleasure to experience.
"Journey in Sensuality: Anna Halprin and Rodin" is a chance to look at the creative process of one of the great figures of modern dance, 84-year-old Anna Halprin. Director Ruedi Gerber involves us in her creative process, from initial idea to extensive rehearsals to sensual performance by the unclothed dancers of the Sea Ranch Collective. The film will be screening at various Laemmle theaters on May 9 and 10. Gerber and Halprin will appear at the 7:30 p.m. May 9 screening at Laemmle's Ahrya Fine Arts, 8556 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills.
