BRIEF: New PBS series 'Nature Cat' co-produced in Chicago

Jan. 20--"Nature Cat," a series for children aged 3 to 8 and just announced as a fall offering from PBS Kids, is a Chicago co-production.

The creators are Spiffy Pictures in Highland Park, makers of "Bunnytown" for Playhouse Disney (now Disney Junior) and "Jack's Big Music Show" for Nick Jr. As co-producer, Chicago's WTTW-Ch. 11 has duties that include helping to secure funding for the series and guiding the show into the PBS system, said a station spokeswoman.

"Nature Cat," according to a PBS Kids news release Monday from the Television Critics Association meeting in Pasadena, Calif., follows "Fred, a house cat who dreams of exploring the great outdoors. In each episode, once his family leaves for the day, Fred transforms into Nature Cat, 'backyard explorer extraordinaire.'"

The animated series aims to encourage children's connection with nature, the release said.
