BRIEF: Navy jet skids into San Diego Bay, pilot ejects

May 23--A Navy jet skidded off the runway at North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado on Friday afternoon and went into San Diego Bay, the Navy said.

The pilot of the aircraft, a T-45C trainer, ejected safely, the Navy said. He was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for evaluation. He was later released.

The aircraft is assigned to a training squadron at Meridian, Miss. The pilot was conducting routine training in advance of aircraft carrier landings, the Navy said.

Initial reports are that the pilot was pulled from the water by local fishermen.

An investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the incident, the Navy said. The Navy is using a crane to lift the aircraft from the water.
