Music plays in Jimmy Butler's new 6,000-pound boombox aquarium

Nov. 12--Bulls guard/forward Jimmy Butler screamed when he walked into his River North mansion last month and saw his new boombox-themed aquarium.

"I wish I could put it on my shoulder and walk around with it," said Butler, 26.

The 6,000-pound tank was set up by Wayde King and Brett Raymer, stars of Animal Planet's "Tanked." The episode featuring the installation of Butler's saltwater aquarium is scheduled to air at 9 p.m. Friday.

The 9-by-10-foot aquarium holds more than 600 gallons and 50 fish -- a nod to the Bulls' upcoming 50th anniversary -- including the Jordan's tuskfish to honor Bulls star Michael Jordan.

The aquarium has a custom bubbler to make it look like it's a boombox equalizer, but the feature Butler seemed to enjoy the most is the wireless speaker system so music can filter through the tank.

"My fish gonna be bumpin' here," Butler says in the "Tanked" episode, though an Animal Planet spokeswoman said the speakers do not touch the aquarium's thick acrylic, which acts as insulation to protect the fish from vibrations.

Butler told the Tribune Thursday that while he likes performers such as The Weeknd (which was playing over the speakers at the time at the Advocate Center), he prefers country music.

"They need a little country music here and there, make them feel right at home. If you're going to be a part of my household, you gotta like country music," Butler said.

Butler's six-bedroom, 10,000-square-foot mansion, which he purchased in September for $4.3 million, includes a custom staircase, an elevator and a 750-bottle wine cellar.

Butler, who was selected by the Bulls in the 2011 NBA draft, signed a five-year contract this summer worth more than $90 million.

Tribune reporter K.C. Johnson contributed to this report.
