Nov. 26--Chicago Tribune Media Group's Lake County News-Sun reports: A Mundelein man was sentenced to 24 years in prison Tuesday for killing a Round Lake Beach mother of three in a November 2012 car crash.
Mark Oelerich, 23, who was convicted in September of first-degree murder in the crash that killed Araceli Villasenor, 24, of Round Lake Beach, and injured two of her children, cried as he addressed the court.
"I'm so sorry for what I've done. Araceli's death will be on my conscience until the day I die," he said.
Immediately after the crash, Oelerich was recorded telling an OnStar operator that he "wanted to have the greatest DMT trip of my entire life," referring to a powerful hallucinogenic drug. A drug test found marijuana in his system.
"I was trying to test if I was invincible, and it was wrong," Oelerich told investigators, according to prosecutors.
Defense attorney Elliot Pinsel said Oelerich has been receiving treatment for schizophrenia while in jail and was schizophrenic and delusional at the time of the crash.
