March 02--A stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in Ventura County was shut down in both directions early Sunday because of a mudslide, but officials anticipated reopening the road in the evening.
Around 4:30 a.m., the slide dumped 3 to 5 feet of mud on portions of the road between Calleguas Creek and Mugu Rock, said Caltrans spokesman Patrick Chandler.
Crews worked all day to remove the mud, clear debris basins and clean out the storm drains.
The road is expected to be reopened by 7:30 p.m., Chandler said.
A nine-mile stretch of the highway -- between Las Posas and Yerba Buena roads -- just reopened Friday after being closed in late November because of mud and rock slides. The months-long road closure was necessary to stabilize the road and make sure drivers were safe, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Workers moved 40,000 yards of dirt to rebuild slopes washed away by the rainstorm and used a crane to move boulders to stabilize the slopes.
