BRIEF: Motorcyclist killed after hitting deer on I-94, being hit by truck

Oct. 09--A Skokie man was killed early Thursday morning after he struck a deer on the Edens Expressway near north suburban Northfield, then was struck by a passing truck, according to Illinois State Police.

The man, identified as 25-year-old Huvefa Ukani, was driving a motorcycle south on Interstate 94 when he hit the deer near Willow Road around 12:20 a.m., Sgt. Alexander Diaz said.

Diaz said Ukani and another motorist hit the deer after it ran out into the middle of the road, but the person in the other vehicle was not hurt. Ukani was able to get up after the crash and apparently was walking along the roadway when a passing commercial tractor-trailer struck him, Diaz said.

The driver of the trailer fled the scene and authorities had no further information about that vehicle, Diaz said.

Investigators were analyzing the crash but it was not known if alcohol or speed were factors, Diaz said.

Ukani was taken in serious condition to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and later pronounced dead, Diaz said. The deer also died, police said.

Southbound lanes of I-94 were reopened about 5:30 a.m.
